Everyday Moments

On October 14th we filmed and photographed a wedding and reception. One thing stuck out in my mind. The father of the bride gave a speech where he recounted a number of things that he would never forget about his daughter - mostly shared moments. His daughter had given a similiar speech the day before and many of the moments that they included were the same.

Here's what stuck out: most of them were moments that any of us could create with our children every day - racing in a pool, creating funny hairsyles in a pool, and going to our children's activities. We are tempted to create the spectacular, but in the end many of the moments we create are pretty ordinary but infused with a lot of love and time. On the biggest planned day of anyone's life, the bride and father remembered those moments out of all of them to share with the guests.

I was reminded of Romans 12:1, "So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life - your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life - and place it before God as an offering." (The Message) The moments that are significant to me are moments where Jesus broke in and spent time with me. There have been other dramatic moments, but I believe that God mostly speaks through ordinary things in extraordinary ways. He certainly has used very ordinary people to perform miracles and to be at the foundation level of his Kingdom.

He has chosen me to be a husband and a father, and I look forward to many more of those "ordinary" moments of spending life together.
